93%!! of Australians say protecting personal privacy is important to them… the latest stats

The latest statistics on our attitudes, demonstrate how important privacy is to Australians.

The “Australian Community Attitudes to Privacy” survey (ACAPS) has just been released.  The survey is run by the Office of the Information Commissioner.  A snap shot follows:

87% are more concerned about their privacy than they were 2 years ago.

98% expect organisations to minimise privacy risks.

68% would be more likely to use digital services if they believed their personal information would be handled fairly and responsibly.

68% say consent often doesn’t feel like a genuine choice.

77% who had been involved in a data breach had experienced at least one form of harm.

93% support a legal right to request deletion of their data.

Carly Kind, the Privacy Commissioner stated “our expectations about privacy continue to sharpen…and wariness of emerging technologies is increasing…”.

So, if you’re integrating AI into your processes and governance structure, with that wariness, how can you promote trust in the management of privacy risks by your organisation?

We recommend:

  • Featuring website and social media content which reinforces the message that privacy is respected
  • Communicating that a privacy impact assessment was run prior to the implementation or use of AI internally
  • Ensuring your privacy policy accurately and clearly reflects the way you handle personal information
  • Resourcing your privacy team adequately so that privacy complaints or queries are actioned promptly

And, if your organisation is working on AI implementation, please contact us for AI governance services and a workshop for a privacy impact assessment.

We can help you to maximise the opportunities AI offers whilst mitigating your risk of a data breach.
